  • The demand factor...

Its human trafficking Awareness month and I want to shed some light onto the demand side of this issue. The link between pornography and sex trafficking is something that is slowly being brought to light, has been researched in depth and I believe needs to start being exposed for what it is and what it is doing.  It’s a tricky topic and can be uncomfortable because it brings the issue closer to home because it is in many homes and pornography has not been a frequently invited topic of conversation. But I feel like to understand sex trafficking we must...

  • No pulling on heart strings.....just the honest truth

This is a glimpse into the day and the life as a social entrepreneur, we are going to answer a few common questions we get and give you a peek into our journey.   We often get asked why Bangkok? Why not people closer by?  It’s because we were there, we saw the need and we just said let’s do something here and now where we know we can do something. It certainly doesn’t keep us from the realities of issues in our own communities and country, this is just where we started and hope to move into other areas...

  • Sex and the Super Bowl

Many of you know that we employ women who have been exploited by the sex industry…many of them trafficked into the industry. A couple years ago I started searching for events in America that stood up against human/sex trafficking. I was thinking conventions, prevention and networking events. The one search result that came up over and over was the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Super Bowl has become an awareness event because it draws the supply and demand factors from across the country to a single city for a single weekend. This year it’s in Houston, Texas. The Super Bowl is the...

  • The Gift of Giving

Last time we had traveled to Thailand to work with the woman who produce our products we had taken a weekend trip to a beach resort that was so beautiful and relaxing but we both couldn’t figure out why we were so anxious to get back to hot crazy Bangkok, navigating the muggy crowded city and working with the woman but I finally concluded that there is something that happens to you when you begin to serve: You cannot know true life without it, it brings us out of our own way which is so entrapping to self-fulfillment. When we...

  • United We Stand For Freedom

Today I became an American…a citizen of a country that was founded on and has fought relentlessly for freedom. The United States stands strong made of individuals with civil liberties and political rights. It is a privilege to belong to such a nation and should not be taken for granted in the 21st century. Far too many people, out of no choice of their own, are born or immigrate to countries that do not offer freedom or protection from injustice. Emily and I started Awaken because we wanted to help create economic and empowering opportunities for those without them. We...

  • New Project on the Thai-Myanmar border

In a small village nestled in a lush valley along the Thai-Myanmar border we meet three incredibly amazing Thai women and their vision for helping trafficked women through job training and providing the basic necessities of life-housing and food.  Tae carries all the Burmese women’s identification as they have no purses, no belongings, just smiles on their faces because they are now being taken care of by Tae’s auntie, who is the most precious elderly woman with so much love and light in her. Every week Tae travels with these women back to Myanmar to get new temporary Thai visas....

  • Thailand again!

It’s been a few days since we landed in Bangkok, it’s our fourth time here and it’s starting to feel like second nature maneuvering through the city and culture. Even china town, the land of plenty…. plenty of things, noise, people traffic and smells, is feeling like a second home as we spend long hot days sourcing fabric and supplies to bring back to the ladies that produce our designs. My favorite shop, by some miracle I was able to relocate, positioned in a small space along a narrow alley way I discovered a few treasures for my new collection...
